Keep Smiling

May 25, 2011

Someone asks you, “How are you?” Is your answer a) hanging in there b) Getting by c) not bad. Or is it, no matter how you may feel at that moment “great” or “fantastic”.

The attitude of RWA R=Ready W=Willing A=Able. The more you adopt that attitude in all circumstances the more it will become authentic. The more your day and your performance will be on the path of fulfilling your purpose.

In addition, you will affect and effect those around you who will also adopt that attitude, “etc. etc. etc” from The King and I. It’s just like a smile. You wear a smile and it wears you and all around you. Put a smile in your words.

Yourself As Your Rival

May 24, 2011

Once again sing along with me, “It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight, rising up to the challenge of our rival”, Survivor. How often is our toughest rival the person we see when we look in the mirror? The opponent who holds us back and tries to tear us down through trash talk (see the inner-speak series). You are stronger. Deliver a knockout punch and free yourself from your self-imposed constraints.

Make a Sea Change In Order To See Change

May 23, 2011
Continuing with Friday’s thought.  So many people are dissatisfied, filled with discontent, or just plain unhappy.  We would like to see change in our life, but are we willing to make changes, real changes?  It takes courage to go into the unknown, but that is where your true purpose will be found.  If you seek the change in the same places you’ve been than you are not moving forward, you are going around in a circle.

“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself”. – Leo Tolstoy

“Everyone has a talent.  What is rare is the courage to nurture it in solitude and to follow the talent to the dark places where it leads”. – Erica Jong

Traveling Man

May 19, 2011

As we climb our mountain, our journey, it is tempting to ask ourselves “Am I there yet?” The truthful answer is no. You are never really there. If you travel with your purpose, then you get closer all the time. You are closer but never there. As long as you’re here, you’re never there. Our potential is never fully tapped. Yet you will find joy in the constant growth and potential for more. If you find yourself asking that question, think and say

“But I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep”. – From Robert Frost’s poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”

At ninety-one the great cellist Pablo Casals was asked why he still practiced, he said

“because I am making progress”

Es Past Nischt

May 18, 2011
There is a story of a Rabbi who whenever a child of his misbehaved, he merely said to the child “Es Past Nischt”.  This is a Yiddish idiom which basically means “this doesn’t suit you”, or “you are better than that”.
This thought can be a valuable reminder that indeed we are better than our missteps.  We can always do better.
This can be a gentle and empowering reminder to our loved ones and certainly to ourselves.  Rather than beat yourself up, pick yourself up.  “You are better than that”.

Believe in yourself, if you don’t, no one else will, and if you don’t why should they?

Today Can Be Your Greatest Day. So Far (cont’d)

May 17, 2011
We have all heard the phrase “today is the first day of the rest of my life”.  In that spirit, why not make it “Today is the first time in my life I did—–”  Pick something that’s a first and do it.  Start with something that you have wanted to do for a long time and you keep putting off.  Make note of it and continue with firsts.

“To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did.” – Unknown

Today Can Be Your Greatest Day. So Far

May 16, 2011

“If you want to lend today the distinction of being the greatest day in your life, focus on what you are better able to do today. Maybe your learning comes a little easier; maybe you handle a difficult situation with more maturity; maybe you find that you’ve gotten into some positive new habit that was a struggle for you before. When you build today upon everything you’ve learned and done before, each day stands above the ones that preceded it. Each day can be the greatest day. So far”    Rabbi Zelig Pliskin
