To Save One Life

January 17, 2013

A young boy was walking along the beach when a big wave crashed onto the shore and left many starfish washed up on the beach.  The young boy quickly began picking up one starfish at a time and throwing them back, one at a time .  A man nearby was watching the young boy.  He went up to him and said, “why bother doing that, you can’t save all of them.”  The young boy wiser than his years, looked at the one in his hand, then at the man and said “yes, but I can save this one.”  It is taught in the Talmud that to “save one life, is to save the world.”

Why wait until someone washes up on the shore?

“To the world you may be just one person, but to one person you may be the world.” – Brandi Snyder

“I am only one, But still I am one. I cannot do everything, But still I can do something; And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.”  – Edward Everett Hale

“How wonderful it is, that nobody need wait a single minute before starting to improve the world.” – Anne Frank

I wish I remembered the source for the original version of this story so that I could give credit where it’s due
